1-to-1 safeguarding checklist

Tick these off before every new player. They keep the child safe, and they protect you too.

• DBS check: Coaches of under-18s need an in-date FA-accepted Enhanced DBS check with a Children's Barred List check (renewed every 3 years).
• Safeguarding course: Complete the FA Safeguarding Children course and keep it in date.
• Parent present or in view: For under-18s, a parent or carer stays and can see the session the whole time.
• Public or open venue: Use a park, a club pitch or a sports centre where others can see. Never a private home or a closed room.
• No private messages with children: Do not text, DM or add children on social media. Ever.
• Contact through parents: All bookings, changes and feedback go to the parent or carer.
• Consent: Get written consent from a parent or carer before the first session, including emergency contacts and any medical needs they want you to know.
• Photos and video: Only with written parent consent, only for coaching, and never posted without permission. Never film in changing areas.
• Touch: Only when needed for safety or to show a technique, explained first and with consent.
• Know how to report: If you are worried about a child, follow FA guidance and contact the FA or NSPCC. In an emergency call 999.
